Wood Surface Prep & Finishing Supplies

Wood Surface Preparation & Finishing Supplies

The quality of any finish depends entirely on the surface underneath it. Infinity Tools stocks a complete range of surface preparation and finishing products, from Mirka sandpaper and scuff pads to Narex cabinet scrapers and premium food-safe wood finishes from Odies Oil.

Sanding is typically the first step. The Mirka 18-piece wet/dry sanding sheet assortment covers a broad range of grits for both dry sanding and wet sanding between finish coats. For final surface prep before applying a finish, the Mirlon scuff pads provide a consistent, fine abrasive surface that is more conformable than sandpaper on curved or profiled surfaces.

Cabinet Scrapers and Burnishers

A well-tuned cabinet scraper removes mill marks, glue squeeze-out, and fine surface defects faster than sandpaper and leaves a polished surface that accepts finish beautifully. The 5-piece cabinet scraper set with burnisher and diamond file includes everything needed to set up and maintain a sharp hook. The Narex burnisher and Narex premium cabinet scraper are excellent individual picks for dedicated hand-tool work.

For the final finish coat, Odies Oil products are food-safe, easy to apply, and produce a rich, natural-looking result. The Odies Oil 5-piece complete wood finishing kit includes oil, butter, wax, and applicators in one package. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best grit sandpaper for final sanding before applying a wood finish?

Most woodworkers stop between 150 and 220 grit for bare wood before applying an oil or penetrating finish. Going finer can close the grain and reduce penetration. The Mirka wet/dry assortment includes grits suited to every stage of surface prep.

What is Odies Oil and how is it applied?

Odies Oil is a food-safe, penetrating wood finish made from a blend of oils and waxes. It is applied by wiping a thin coat onto the wood surface, allowing it to penetrate, then buffing off the excess. It requires no special equipment and produces a durable, natural-looking result.

Is Odies Oil food safe for cutting boards and butcher blocks?

Yes. Odies Oil and its companion products — Wood Butter and Wood Wax — are all formulated to be food safe, making them suitable for cutting boards, butcher blocks, bowls, and other surfaces that contact food.

How do I sharpen a cabinet scraper?

Sharpening a cabinet scraper involves filing or stoning the edge square, then burnishing a small hook onto each edge using a hardened burnishing rod. The cabinet scraper set with burnisher and diamond file includes all the tools needed for this process.

What is the difference between a card scraper and a cabinet scraper?

A card scraper is a thin, flat piece of tool steel used for final surface smoothing. A cabinet scraper typically refers to a handled scraper or a set of shaped scrapers with various profiles for curved surfaces and moldings.

Can I use Mirka wet/dry sandpaper for sanding between finish coats?

Yes. Wet/dry sandpaper used with water or a finishing lubricant between coats cuts the surface evenly without loading up. It is especially effective when sanding varnish, lacquer, or water-based topcoats between applications.

What are Mirlon scuff pads used for in woodworking?

Mirlon scuff pads are a non-woven abrasive material used for light surface scuffing between finish coats, removing light rust from metal surfaces, and final prep work on contoured or profiled surfaces where sheet sandpaper is too stiff.

Does Infinity Tools carry Mirka Bulldog Gold sandpaper?

Yes. The Mirka Bulldog Gold Proflex sandpaper is available in both a complete pack and individual 9x11-inch sheets. It features a flexible backing suited to hand sanding contoured surfaces.

What is a burnisher used for?

A burnisher is a hardened steel rod used to turn the edge of a cabinet scraper into a fine hook that cuts rather than scrapes. The Narex burnisher is a high-quality option for this task.
