Frequently Asked Questions

What is a handscrew clamp used for in woodworking?

A handscrew clamp is a wooden-jawed clamp with two independent screw spindles that allow the jaws to be set parallel or angled. Woodworkers use them for panel glue-ups, angled clamping tasks, and securing workpieces during hand-tool or machine operations.

Are Dubuque handscrew clamps still made in the United States?

Yes. Dubuque handscrew clamps have been manufactured in Dubuque, Iowa since 1887 and continue to be made in the USA, which makes them a notable choice among woodworkers who prioritize domestic manufacturing.

How do you adjust the jaws on a handscrew clamp?

Each jaw has its own spindle. Turning both spindles opens or closes the jaws. Adjusting the spindles at different rates angles the jaws toward or away from each other, allowing you to clamp non-parallel surfaces or apply concentrated pressure at one end of the jaw.

Will handscrew clamps mar a wood surface?

No. The wooden jaws of Dubuque handscrew clamps distribute pressure gently and will not dent or scratch wood surfaces the way metal-jawed clamps can. They are safe to use on finished surfaces without additional protective pads.

What size handscrew clamp do I need for panel glue-ups?

The appropriate jaw length depends on the width of the panel. A good rule of thumb is to use a jaw that spans at least half the clamping width so pressure is evenly distributed. The Dubuque Handscrew Clamps product page lists the available sizes and their maximum opening capacities.

Can handscrew clamps be used during machining operations?

Yes. Their stable, freestanding wooden design makes handscrew clamps useful for holding workpieces at the drill press, router table, or workbench during hand-tool operations where a third hand is needed to keep the part from shifting.

How do Dubuque handscrew clamps compare to bar or pipe clamps?

Bar and pipe clamps apply linear pressure in a straight line, ideal for long face-to-face assemblies. Handscrew clamps offer angled jaw adjustment, wooden jaw protection, and freestanding stability, making them better suited for irregular or angled clamping situations.

Does Infinity Tools offer a quality guarantee on Dubuque clamps?

Yes. Infinity Tools backs the quality of products it sells. See the quality guarantee page for complete details and how to reach the team with any product concerns.

Are Dubuque handscrew clamps good for beginners?

Yes. While the two-spindle adjustment takes a little practice to master, handscrew clamps are intuitive once you understand how each spindle controls a different end of the jaw. Their versatility makes them a valuable addition to any beginner woodworking shop.
