Frequently Asked Questions

Is Odie's Oil truly food safe for cutting boards and bowls?

Yes. Odie's Oil is formulated to be food-safe, non-toxic, and solvent-free, making it appropriate for surfaces that come into direct contact with food such as cutting boards, serving boards, salad bowls, and kitchen utensils. The Odie's Oil original formula and Wood Butter are both suitable for these applications.

How many coats of Odie's Oil does a project need?

Most projects require only a single coat. Apply a thin layer, allow it to penetrate for the manufacturer's recommended time, then buff off the excess. On very porous or end-grain surfaces, a second coat may be applied once the first has cured.

What is the difference between Odie's Oil, Wood Butter, and Wood Wax?

The original Odie's Oil is the core penetrating finish for all wood surfaces. Wood Butter is a wax-rich formula suited to end grain and high-contact areas. Wood Wax provides a buffable, smooth topcoat for a refined surface feel.

Can Odie's Oil be used on oily exotic hardwoods like teak or rosewood?

Yes. Odie's Oil is formulated to penetrate and bond with a wide range of wood species, including naturally oily exotics that resist conventional film-forming finishes. Wiping the surface with a solvent prior to application helps improve absorption on very oily species.

How do I clean up tools and surfaces after applying Odie's Oil?

The Odie's Oil system is designed to work with Odie's Safer Solvent, a low-toxicity cleaner that removes residue from applicators and surfaces without the hazards associated with mineral spirits or naphtha.

What is included in the Odie's Oil 5-Pc Complete Wood Finishing Kit?

The Odie's Oil 5-Pc Complete Wood Finishing Kit bundles the primary finishing products and application tools needed to finish a project from start to final buffing. It is an excellent starting point for woodworkers trying Odie's Oil for the first time.

Does Odie's Oil raise the grain on bare wood?

Oil-based penetrating finishes can cause slight grain raising on bare wood, particularly on softer species. Lightly sanding with a fine-grit abrasive between the first and second applications, if needed, will level any raised fibers and produce a smoother final surface.

Does Infinity Tools ship Odie's Oil products?

Yes. Current shipping options and rates are available on the Infinity Tools shipping policies page.

Can Odie's Oil be applied over an existing finish?

Odie's Oil is a penetrating finish designed for bare or raw wood. Applying it over a cured film-forming finish such as lacquer, varnish, or polyurethane will not allow the oil to penetrate. Existing finishes should be stripped or sanded back to bare wood for best results.

How should I dispose of oily rags after applying Odie's Oil?

Rags saturated with any penetrating oil finish can self-ignite if bunched together while wet. Lay applicator rags flat outdoors to dry fully before disposal, or store them submerged in water in a sealed metal container. This safety precaution applies regardless of the oil's non-toxic formulation.
